Suggestions for how to give dog medicine?
It comes in a capsule and I have to give her 1/3 (powder). It is very bitter to her and I have tried chicken broth and mixing it in canned food. She won't eat it. Do you have any suggestions on what I could mix the powder in that she won't taste it? @Julie - the vet said to give her 1/3 of a capsule twice a day. It has to be opened up and poured out
I was always under the impression that capsules that contained a powder medication were suppose to be swallowed whole, not opened or chewed up. Are you sure you have the directions right? If you're sure you do, you can mix the powder with a little water or broth and syringe it down her throat. If you don't know how to do that, just use Google for the directions. The only other thing I can think of is to wrap up the powder in another food item she would like such as a piece of cheese. As I stated before, you better double check on the directions for the use of this medication. My dog is on a medication that comes on capsule form, and I know for a fact that the capsule should be swallowed whole. When my dog first started on this med about three years ago, and BEFORE the dosage was lowered, my Vet offered to give me some empty capsules so I could divide the contents of the leftover meds into two capsules insead of the original one. That would mean that I would have to open the capsules, and pour half of the powder into another capsule, but the dog would still have to swallow it. (Not chew it, not have it put into food, or not dissolve it in water to either drink it or to have it syringed into his throat.) Be sure what you're doing or this medication might not have the effect that it's suppose to have. Add: OK, I just wanted to make sure the directions were clear. Sometimes people don't understand the directions. (not saying that you didn't, just saying) Some people might think they're suppose to give 1/3 the amount of a capsule 3 times per day, but the real directions might be to give ONE capsule, three times per day. I didn't mean to say that you were wrong with your dog's medication. I just wanted to make sure you were right.
